Wareside Entertainers was founded in 1978 by Derek and Marion Hirschle with people from the village and a few friends and relations. WE have expanded over the years to include members from surrounding villages and towns.

Our first production was a variety show “What a Performance”. This included two one act plays, The Devil among the Skins by Ernest Goodwin and Four Queens Wait for Henry by L. Du Garde Peach interspersed with songs from “Calamity Jane”, Bambi and the Music Hall.

Over the years our repertoire has ranged from Shakespeare to Alan Ayckbourn, Oscar Wilde to Ray Cooney; from serious drama like Steel Magnolias and Shadowlands to the Farndale farces and ‘Allo, ‘Allo. Probably our most ambitious productions to date were Michael Frayn’s Noises Off and in the summer of 2012, Under Milk Wood.

Our first pantomime, The Sleeping Cutie in 1980 was a spoof, potted pantomime, part of a Christmas Variety show. Since then WE have presented a new pantomime every year. The early ones written by Derek Hirschle and after he moved from the village, by Judith King.

Other members have recently taken up the challenge, with Beauty & the Beast by Ruth King, Old King Cole by Anne Phipps, Rose Red and Snow White by Rebecca Andrews, Hansel & Gretel by Alex Young, Once Upon a Time by Shirley Mead and Snow White by Alex Young.
